Pressure Ulcer
A pressure ulcer, also known as a decubitus ulcer or bedsore, is a localized injury to the skin and underlying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure, often over a bony prominence. In podiatry, pressure ulcers commonly occur on the heel, lateral malleolus, or plantar surface of the foot, especially in patients with limited mobility, neuropathy, or vascular compromise. Sustained pressure impairs capillary blood flow, leading to tissue ischemia, necrosis, and ulceration.
Shear forces, friction, and moisture can hasten skin breakdown. Pressure ulcers in the foot are of particular concern in diabetic patients due to impaired healing and increased risk of infection or amputation.
Early recognition, offloading, wound care, and addressing underlying systemic factors are crucial for effective management and prevention.
